Specialty Wood &
Door Refinishing
Furniture-grade preparation and premium marine-grade finishes for your home's most prominent wood assets. From cedar garage doors and entry doors to custom shutters and siding.
A Three-Layer System, Not a Single Coat
Entry doors and garage doors are seen from inches away. A one-coat fence-grade product looks dull and wears through in a season. We build the finish in three layers — a stain that bonds to the wood, a sealer that locks pigment in, and a clear coat that takes the UV hit instead of the wood.
Layer 1 — Alkyd Stain
Hand-applied high-solid alkyd resin stain that soaks into the wood and saturates the grain. This is the layer that sets the color — rich, deep, and even across both flat panels and detailed millwork.
Layer 2 — Sealer Bond
An intermediate sealing coat locks the pigment into the wood and creates a chemical bond between the stain layer and the clear coat above it. Without this, the clear coat eventually delaminates from the stain.
Layer 3 — Spar Urethane
Marine-grade spar urethane sits on top with built-in UV absorbers. It is the layer that takes the sun damage — and the only layer that ever needs a maintenance top-coat down the road.

The Art of Architectural Wood Refinishing
Exterior entry doors, garage doors, and custom shutters are highly visible architectural elements that define your home's curb appeal. Unlike rough-sawn fence boards, these smooth wood assets feature tight grains and detailed millwork that require a highly refined, furniture-grade approach to restoration.
At Major Fence Stain, we treat your home's premium wood with meticulous care. We spend 70% of our project time on masking and preparation—completely protecting adjacent brick, glass, and hardware. We then carefully chemically strip old, peeling varnishes and perform detailed hand-sanding to create a flawless, raw wood surface.
We apply specialized high-solid alkyd resin stains and seal them with multiple coats of marine-grade spar urethane clear coats. The result is a rich, hand-rubbed luster that blocks 99% of UV rays and prevents moisture absorption, keeping your home's most visible wood looking brand new for years.

Architectural Material Guide
Premium exterior doors and shutters feature highly diverse materials. We adjust our preparation techniques and chemical formulas based on the exact wood type of your architectural assets.
| Material Type | Suitability | Finish Type | UV Block Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Mahogany / Oak Doors | Highly Recommended | Marine-Grade Spar Urethane | Excellent (Dense cells) |
| Custom Cedar Garage Doors & Shutters | Highly Recommended | Penetrating Alkyd Resin | Outstanding (Natural oils) |
| Fiberglass / Composite Doors | Specialty Gel-Stain Only | Premium Gel-Stain + Clear Coat | Excellent (Non-porous) |
Signs Your Wood Assets Need Refinishing
Do not wait for wood rot or structural splitting. Inspect your entry doors, garage doors, and shutters for these key environmental indicators to determine if your wood is actively degrading.
Peeling or Flaking Varnish
UV Sealer BreakdownWhen clear coats on garage doors or entry doors begin to flake, peel, or turn white, UV rays have destroyed the chemical bond. This dead film must be stripped completely to prevent wood rot.
Faded, Dry Wood Grain
Loss of Moisture & OilsIf your shutters or garage doors look dry, dull, or have light gray patches, the protective oils have evaporated. Unsealed wood will quickly absorb rain, causing splitting and warping.
Black Mold Under Clear Coat
Trapped MoistureIf water penetrates through cracks in a failing clear coat, it gets trapped underneath the film. This dark, damp environment promotes rapid black mold growth, rotting the wood beneath.
Wood Cracking & Checking
Severe Sun BakingIntense Texas sun bakes the natural moisture out of wood fibers, causing them to shrink and split. This creates deep cracks that allow rain to penetrate into the core of the door structure.
Common Specialty Refinishing Mistakes
Specialty architectural wood refinishing requires extreme precision. Amateur techniques and cheap retail stains will fail quickly, ruining the smooth, high-end look.
Using Standard Fence Stain on Doors
Dull, Sticky, Uneven FinishFence stains are designed for rustic, rough-sawn wood. Applying them to smooth garage or entry doors results in a sticky, uneven, low-end finish that traps dirt and turns black.
Staining Over Failing Clear Coats
Rapid Peeling & BlisteringApplying new stain or varnish directly over a peeling, cracked old finish is a waste of money. The new sealer cannot reach the wood cells and will peel off along with the old finish.
Skipping the Hand-Sanding Prep
Rough, Splintered FinishSpecialty architectural wood requires furniture-grade prep. Skipping detailed hand-sanding traps wood fibers, dust, and splinters under the clear coat, ruining the smooth, high-end look.
Using Low-Grade Exterior Varnishes
Yellowing & Rapid FailureCheap retail varnishes quickly yellow and crack under intense UV rays. Specialty exterior doors require premium marine-grade spar urethanes with advanced UV absorbers to handle the Texas sun.
Our Meticulous Process
Architectural wood refinishing requires furniture-grade precision. We execute a highly disciplined multi-day sequence to ensure your doors and shutters are prepped, hand-sanded, and sealed with premium marine-grade finishes.
Meticulous Masking & Chemical Stripping
We spend hours masking off all adjacent brick, siding, glass, and handles. We then apply wood-safe chemical strippers to dissolve old, peeling varnishes.
Furniture-Grade Hand-Sanding
We carefully hand-sand the entire wood surface using fine-grit sandpaper, removing dead cellulose and smoothing out grain fibers to prepare for the new finish.
Premium Alkyd Stain Application
We apply our premium, high-solid alkyd resin stain by hand, ensuring uniform pigment absorption and highlighting the natural beauty of the wood grain.
Marine-Grade UV Clear Coat
We apply a heavy protective layer of marine-grade spar urethane clear coat, creating a smooth, durable, highly weather-resistant barrier that blocks 99% of UV rays.
Why Prep Takes 70% of the Time
Applying stain or varnish directly over a weathered or peeling old finish is a recipe for rapid failure. The new sealer cannot reach the healthy wood cells and will quickly blister and peel. We spend the majority of our project time on detailed masking, chemical stripping, and fine-grit hand-sanding. This creates a flawless, raw wood surface, allowing our premium marine-grade clear coats to bond deep into wood cells for maximum durability.
