Professional Fence
Staining & Sealing

Two-sided, back-brushed, semi-transparent oil sealing built for North Texas sun and humidity swings. We bring a 4-to-6-year finish to cedar privacy fences, pressure-treated pine, and builder-grade spruce.

Wood Science

Why Vertical Fence Wood Fails First

Fences face different stresses than decks. The west-facing side gets seven hours of low-angle afternoon sun, the bottom 12 inches get sprinkler splash daily, and the boards have to expand and contract through 40% humidity swings without cracking. Our stain system is built around these three failure modes.

Low-Angle UV Defense

Afternoon sun hits a fence almost perpendicular for hours. Our transoxide pigments load the surface with UV-blocking particles that fences see far more of than decks do.

Sprinkler-Splash Block

The bottom foot of any fence sees more water than the rest combined. We double-coat the lower pickets and saturate the end-grains so capillary action cannot draw moisture upward.

Flexible Penetrating Oil

Oil-based penetrating formulas move with the wood as humidity changes. Film-forming products crack on vertical pickets within two seasons. We never use solid stains on a fence face.

A Stain System Built for Fences, Not Decks

Most contractors run the same product they use on a deck up and down a fence. It is the wrong tool. A deck takes overhead UV and foot wear; a fence takes side-angle UV and a sprinkler bath. We carry separate formulas for vertical wood with a higher pigment load, lower film build, and the flexibility to move with every humidity swing in the DFW summer.

Every picket gets sprayed and immediately back-brushed by hand so the oil drives into the wood pores instead of drying on the surface. That single step is the difference between a finish that holds for five years and one that streaks out in twelve months. Cap rails and post tops get a second coat because they take the worst of the sun.

We stain both sides of the fence as standard, including the neighbor-facing side. One-sided staining traps moisture inside the boards and causes cupping within a year, which is the single most common reason a fence has to be replaced before it should.

How Your Fence Wood Takes Stain

The species your builder used dictates how the stain behaves, how long it lasts, and how soon it can be applied. We adjust formula and timing accordingly.

Signs Your Fence Needs Sealing Now

Four field signals that the surface protection is gone and the wood is exposed.

Silver-Gray Surface Color

UV Lignin Breakdown

Sun has destroyed the surface lignin and the fence has lost all pigment. The wood underneath is still structurally fine, but every additional month of exposure causes deeper checking and grain raise.

Black Streaks at the Bottom Boards

Sprinkler & Ground-Splash Mold

Sprinklers hitting the lower pickets feed mildew that lives in the wood pores. Pressure-washing alone makes it worse β€” the spores need to be killed chemically before any stain is applied or they will bleed back through.

Cupping or Curling Pickets

Moisture Imbalance

One face wets and dries faster than the other, usually because only the street side was previously stained. The boards curl toward the dry side. Two-sided sealing stops it; severely cupped boards have to be replaced.

Visible Nail Bleeding & Rust

Failing Galvanization

Black or orange streaks running vertically from every fastener mean the original electro-galvanized nails are oxidizing. Stain will not hide this β€” we recommend re-fastening with hot-dipped ring-shank nails before sealing.

Avoid Costly Mistakes

Where Other Crews Cut Corners

The four shortcuts that explain why most fence stain jobs in DFW only last a year.

Power-Washing on High Pressure

Raised Grain & Splinters

A 3,000-PSI tip held inches from cedar fuzzes the wood fibers permanently. The stain then sits on a hairy surface that traps dirt and looks blotchy. We clean chemically and rinse on a low fan tip.

Spraying Without Back-Brushing

12-Month Finish Failure

Pure-spray application looks fast and even, but the stain dries on the surface instead of soaking into the wood. We back-brush every picket β€” it doubles the lifespan of the same can of stain.

Skipping the Cap Rail & Post Tops

Rot Starts From the Top

Horizontal cap rails take vertical UV all day and pool water. They need an extra coat. Crews that spray only the vertical face leave the cap to gray out first, which then telegraphs failure down the rest of the fence.

Using Solid-Color Deck Stain on Vertical Pickets

Peeling Within 18 Months

Solid stains form a film. On a fence that expands and contracts with every Texas humidity swing, that film cracks and peels. Penetrating oil-based semi-transparent is the only formula that lasts on vertical wood here.

The Two-Day Fence Process

Wash, Mask, Spray, Brush

A typical 150-foot residential fence takes us two working days from arrival to final walkthrough. Here is exactly what happens on each one.

1

Chemical Wash & Brightening

We apply a sodium percarbonate cleaner to dissolve gray cellulose and kill mildew spores, then neutralize with an oxalic acid brightener to bring the wood back to its natural tone.

2

Property Masking

Rosin paper along the grass line, tarps on brick and stone, plastic on AC units, pool decks, and outdoor furniture. Everything that is not the fence gets covered before any sprayer is turned on.

3

Spray + Back-Brush, Both Sides

Airless spray for even coverage, then immediate back-brushing of every picket so the oil drives into the wood pores. Both faces, cap rail, post tops, and exposed end-grains.

4

Walkthrough & Cleanup

We pull all masking, blow down hard surfaces, and walk the fence line with you so you can spot-check coverage. Pets and kids back in the yard the same evening.

Why Back-Brushing Matters

Spray-Only Looks the Same on Day One

Two fences sprayed with the same product can look identical the day the truck pulls away. Twelve months later the back-brushed fence still beads water and the spray-only fence is already gray on the cap rail. The pigment that does not get pushed into the pores never bonds β€” it just sits on the surface and washes off in the first hard rain. We have never finished a job without a hand on every picket.
