Patio, Pergola &
Deck Staining
Preserve your outdoor living assets with specialized high-wear sealer formulas. From direct overhead UV rays on pergolas to heavy foot traffic on decks, we keep your wood protected and gorgeous.
The Science of Horizontal Wear
Decks are subjected to vertical UV rays from directly overhead, which break down wood lignin molecules three times faster than on vertical fences. Additionally, standing rainwater pools on flat boards, absorbing deep into wood cells. We utilize advanced paraffinic formulas with extra-heavy transoxide pigments to provide elite defense.
UV Blockers
Our heavy transoxide pigments act as tiny shields, absorbing and scattering destructive ultraviolet rays before they can bleach and break down the wood fibers.
Water Repellency
Our heavy paraffinic oils create a completely hydrophobic layer inside the wood cells, causing rainwater to bead up and roll off rather than absorbing and rotting.
Mildewcides
Texas decks are highly prone to black mold and algae. Our formulas are injected with premium commercial fungicides to stop organic growth before it starts.

The Horizontal Wood Challenge
Unlike vertical fence boards, horizontal wood surfaces like decks and steps face extreme environmental stress. Rainwater pools on flat boards, absorbing deep into the wood fibers and promoting mold, mildew, and wood rot. Foot traffic physically abrades the wood surface, wearing away protective sealers.
At Major Fence Stain, we treat decks and pergolas with specialized care. We hand-sand handrails and deck boards to eliminate splinters, then apply double-coat high-solid penetrating oils containing advanced fungicides to keep horizontal surfaces protected and beautiful.
We pay special attention to joints, end-grains, and beam intersections where moisture naturally nests. Hand-brushing these critical connection points prevents rot from developing within the structural framing of your outdoor living spaces.

Structure Checklist
- Detailed wood pore opening: Using balanced sodium percarbonate chemical cleaners.
- Hand-sanding handrails: Ensuring a smooth, splinter-free touch on steps and rails.
- Precision spray & back-brushing: Forcing heavy paraffinic oil deep into beam joints.
Deck & Pergola Material Guide
Horizontal and vertical outdoor living structures utilize different materials. We adjust our preparation techniques and chemical formulas based on the exact wood type of your assets.
| Material Type | Suitability | UV Resistance | Foot Wear Resistance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Western Red Cedar | Highly Recommended | Excellent (Natural tannins) | Moderate (Softwood) |
| Pressure-Treated Pine | Recommended for Decks | Moderate (Prone to cracking) | High (Hardened fiber) |
| Ipe / Brazilian Hardwood | Elite Hardwood (Specialty Prep) | Outstanding (Dense cells) | Extreme (Ironwood) |
Signs Your Deck Needs Immediate Protection
Inspect your outdoor living assets for these key environmental indicators to determine if your wood is actively degrading or structurally compromised.
Water Pooling & Absorbing
Sealer DegradationWhen rainwater no longer beads up on deck floorboards but immediately soaks in, darkening the wood, the protective seal is completely gone, leaving wood cells vulnerable to dry rot.
Wood Splintering & Checking
Severe Sun BakingOverhead UV rays dry out the wood's natural oils, causing the wood fibers to shrink, split, and splinter. This creates a severe safety hazard for bare feet and pets.
Slippery Green or Black Film
Algae & Mold ColonizationDecks in shaded areas trap morning moisture, promoting rapid algae and mold growth. This organic film is highly slippery when wet and actively feeds on wood sugars, rotting the framing.
Peeling or Flaking Sealer
Film-Forming Retail Product FailureIf your current deck finish is cracking, flaking, or peeling off like skin, a cheap retail film-forming product was used. This must be chemically stripped and sanded off completely.
Common Deck Staining Pitfalls
Deck and pergola sealing require surgical precision. Amateur techniques and film-forming retail stains will quickly fail, trapping moisture and rotting the structural framing.
Using Film-Forming Acrylic Stains
Ugly Peeling & Moisture TrappingAcrylic or solid retail stains create a hard plastic layer on top of decks. Foot traffic quickly wears through this layer, allowing water to get underneath and trap moisture, causing rapid rot.
Skipping the Sanding Phase
Rough Splinters & Poor AbsorptionApplying stain directly to weathered wood without mechanical sanding traps dead gray cellulose and splinters under the finish. Sanding is critical to open tight pores and create a barefoot-safe finish.
Over-Applying Sealer
Sticky, Tacky SurfaceApplying too much penetrating oil, or leaving puddles on horizontal boards, results in a sticky, wet-looking finish that traps dirt and turns completely black under the sun.
Ignoring End-Grains & Joists
Accelerated Structural RotThe ends of deck boards absorb moisture 10 times faster than the flat surfaces. Skipping end-grains and joist connections during staining allows rot to destroy the structural framing.
Our Meticulous Deck Process
Decks require surgical precision. We execute a disciplined multi-day technical sequence to ensure your horizontal wood is prepped, sanded, and perfectly sealed.
Stripping, Chemical Cleaning & Brightening
We apply organic cleaners to dissolve mold and algae, strip old weathered finishes, and neutralize the wood's pH to open up tight wood pores.
Detailed Hand & Orbital Sanding
Once dry, we mechanically sand all deck floorboards, handrails, and steps using heavy-duty orbital sanders to remove splinters and create a smooth, bare-foot friendly surface.
Saturated Double-Coat Sealing
We apply a heavy, saturated coat of premium paraffinic oil to all vertical pergola posts and a specialized double-coat to horizontal deck boards to handle heavy traffic.
Walkthrough & Property Restoration
We perform a detailed walkthrough, verify perfect end-grain saturation, clean all masking materials, and carefully return your patio furniture.
Why We Hand-Sand Decks
Applying stain to an unsanded deck is a recipe for disaster. Weathered wood has a layer of dead cellulose fibers on the surface. If you stain over this layer, the oil binds to the dead fibers rather than the healthy wood cells underneath. Within months, the dead fibers will detach, causing the sealer to peel. Our comprehensive hand-sanding process removes this dead layer, ensuring the paraffinic oil absorbs deep into healthy wood cells for maximum lifespan.
